Dar's Birthday Project

Grinning Dar with guitar No more chocolate cake, I say!Scroll

The idea for the "Dar's Birthday Project" began around April 19, 1996 when Dar asked us members of the Dar list to please stop bringing her chocolate cake at concerts. She appreciated the thought and was very gracious about it in that special Dar way, but one can only eat so much chocolate cake, after all.

For the rest of 1996, we considered this, and hit upon an idea: for 1997, how about us Dar-listers doing community service projects in honor of her birthday, compiling them into a book or packet, and giving that to Dar instead of cake? This seemed to make sense, because a great number of us were already civic-minded, and Dar cares deeply about the environment and society.

Thus was the Dar's Birthday Project launched! You can read some of the initial brainstorming email messages about this project here.
